SAN DIEGO, CA – Ocean Discovery Institute recently hosted their Kids In Canyons event in Manzanita Canyon, located in the heart of City Heights. Over the course of three days, the event brought together 36 classrooms, 11 schools, and nearly 1,000 4th graders to discover science, restore habitat, and learn about the different experiences that will be available to the entire community with the opening of the Living Lab.
Attendees included students, teachers, principals and school administrators. Everyone joined in educational tours that highlighted how science and conservation in the canyons is relevant to their daily lives. They also completed a variety of different restoration projects including the removal of non-native plant species and trash collection – all in an effort to make a difference in their canyon.
“I think it’s special that we get to come here and learn about nature – the animals, what invasive plants can do to native plants, and why we shouldn’t throw trash on the ground,” said a 4th grade student from Adams Elementary School. Photos available HERE
