Fisler founded Ocean Discovery (then Aquatic Adventures) out of a kayak closet in 1999. Today, we are a Presidentially-recognized organization that engages 6,000 underserved young people each year in science and conservation education. With the opening of the Living Lab in City Heights in 2017, Ocean Discovery will have the capacity to reach 20,000 annually.
Each year since 2010, KPBS and Union Bank have teamed up to recognized heroes in San Diego’s diverse communities. In addition to the article, KPBS will air a video segment featuring Fisler throughout the month of March.
“I feel very fortunate that I’ve been given the opportunity to do this kind of work. I’m grateful, too, that San Diego believes in what we do,” Fisler said. “The Local Hero award recognition is nice and it’ll bring a lot more attention to this organization.”
