Susan joined the Ocean Leader Program during her sophomore year at Hoover High School, where she participated in year-round leadership opportunities, including our immersive summer residential program.

After high school, Susan pursued a degree at Brandeis University, double majoring in Biology and Chemistry. With her B.S. in hand, she set her sights on earning a Ph.D. in Chemical Oceanography at the University of Washington, with the ultimate goal of securing a position in academia to foster connections for underrepresented groups in science. Throughout her academic journey, she has conducted laboratory and at-sea research, participated in multiple research experiences for undergraduate programs, and received exceptional support from mentors.

Thanks to the generosity of our partners at Southwest Airlines and Susan’s unwavering commitment to education and community, she returned to Ocean Discovery Institute this past summer. As a summer instructor for our Ocean Leaders programs, she played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of science leaders from City Heights.

Susan guided 10th graders from Hoover High School through the science discovery process, leading community field research projects on sea turtle populations, island ecology, and sustainable fisheries in the remote town of Bahia de Los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico. Her expertise and enthusiasm turned complex scientific concepts into engaging learning experiences for our Ocean Leaders. For many of our students, it was their first time away from home and experiencing life with limited resources in another country. Susan’s guidance helped make it a truly transformative experience.

Beyond her role as a summer instructor, Susan’s story is a testament to the power of education, mentorship, and community support. We are incredibly proud of alumni like Susan, who use the resources we provide to launch their own inspiring journeys. Her achievements are a reflection of her personal will, perseverance, and drive to reach her educational goals. Susan, we are so proud of you and look forward to supporting you as you continue on your academic and career pathway! Go Awesome!
