Student Story: Meet Sano – 6th Grader at Clark Middle School

This summer, Sano had experiences that most students his age could only dream of, thanks to opportunities made possible by supporters like you.

He dissected a shark, describing it as both “amazing and unforgettable.” While the smell wasn’t great, he was fascinated to learn about sharks’ seven senses, including the ampullae of Lorenzini that detect electromagnetic fields. “Not everyone gets to do that,” Sano said proudly.

Out in the canyons, Sano and his classmates navigated trails, solved puzzles, and took on challenges together. Surrounded by San Diego’s wild spaces, they explored ecosystems from the deep ocean to kelp forests and estuaries. “I felt good because not everyone gets the opportunity to learn about sharks, touch kelp, and explore nature like this,” he shared.

For Sano, these moments are more than fun, they are transformational. “Yes, everyone should get to learn about these things. I’m learning something new about science every day, things I didn’t even know existed before.”

At just 11 years old, Sano is discovering his passions, building confidence, and seeing himself in the world of science. These one-of-a-kind opportunities, offered at such a critical age, create pathways to futures that students like Sano might never have imagined otherwise.

And he knows he doesn’t do it alone. His message to the educators who guided him says it all: “Thank you for using your time to come here and teach us. That is very helpful for my education. Keep up the good work!”
