Raquel first discovered Ocean Discovery Institute through her son Anthony’s school. What began as a new opportunity for Anthony soon became a source of pride, purpose, and transformation for their entire family.
“I’ve seen such a positive change in my son,” Raquel shares. “He used to be very shy and kept to himself. But since joining Ocean Discovery, he’s become more confident, more curious, and more excited to learn. It really surprised me how much he’s fallen in love with marine biology—especially sharks! Now he’s always asking questions and wanting to learn more.”
As a parent in the City Heights community, Raquel knows that access to high-quality educational programs can be limited.
“Unfortunately, many families in our neighborhood don’t have the financial resources to afford this kind of program,” she explains. “But Ocean Discovery makes it possible for our children to receive an incredible science education—for free. They help our kids feel valued, seen, and important, no matter their background or income.”
Raquel’s involvement has grown beyond her role as a parent. She now volunteers and takes on leadership roles, not only to support her children, but to uplift other families as well.
“When my kids see me helping at Ocean Discovery, it makes them proud. They know I’m there to support them, and that makes me want to keep going. It motivates me to stay involved—not just for my family, but to be part of something bigger. I feel useful. I feel like I’m helping create positive change in our community.”
With a full heart, Raquel adds: “I am deeply, deeply grateful to Ocean Discovery. This program is a gift to our children and to our community. It has made a lasting difference in our lives, and I hope more families can experience that same impact.”
