Ocean Discovery Institute Starts The Year With A Publication In A Prestigious Science Journal

In collaboration with our partners at the University of San Diego, our Programs Manager, Joel Barkan, led the initiative of publishing this article titled “Ocean Discovery Institute’s Model for Empowering Underrepresented Students in STEM: Community-Based, Continuous Belief.”

This publication is a backstage pass to our unique model, demonstrating how science can transform young lives and gives power to science and students. With Joel leading the way, his publication uncovers the background behind our community-based initiatives and says why we believe every single student in City Heights has the potential to be the next generation of science leaders!

Some of the teachers from the schools that we reach who have witnessed our programs say the following; “Many students have shown interest in the sciences. I think the program highlighted science as an option provided leaders from diverse backgrounds that allowed the students to see themselves as scientists.” “It’s especially important for students to have the Ocean Discovery experiences year after year while in the Hoover cluster. It’s neat that many of your employees came from City Heights.”

As we reflect on our work through our community-based initiatives, we are fueled by our mission that each student in City Heights possesses untapped potential waiting to be ignited. We invite all to join us in fostering a community where science transforms young lives and catalyzes a future of diverse and accomplished science leaders from City Heights.
