Where It Begins: Alejandro’s Next Chapter

College doesn’t begin with an application. For Alejandro, it begins with years of experiences, relationships, and opportunities that have helped him imagine what comes next.

Now, as he starts his senior year of high school, he’s realizing just how much has changed, and how much lies ahead.

“As a kid, all I could think about was finding a school, getting a job, and being free,” Alejandro reflects. “Now I think everyone can see it’s not that easy.”

With graduation in the near future, familiar routines and friendships feel different. Alejandro describes nostalgia as bittersweet: appreciating the memories he’s made while knowing he can’t stay in the past. Growing up means letting go of what’s familiar and making room for what’s next.

For him, college is about more than academics. It’s an opportunity to become more independent, step outside his comfort zone, and discover what matters most to him.

“I want to become more responsible, get to know people by stepping outside of my comfort zone, and advocate for myself,” he says.

He doesn’t have his entire future figured out and he knows he doesn’t have to. What matters is being willing to explore, learn, and keep moving forward.

“I see it as yearning, though; understanding there are many doors waiting to be unlocked, I just have to keep walking.”

Getting to this moment has taken years of growth. Through his experiences at Ocean Discovery Institute, Alejandro has had opportunities to learn, build relationships, and discover new possibilities for his future. Now, as he prepares for college, he carries those experiences into his next chapter.

And he won’t navigate the journey alone. As Alejandro works through the rigorous college application process, a mentor is helping him take each step forward.

Next month, we’ll introduce the mentor walking alongside Alejandro and explore how that support is helping him prepare for what comes next.

Alejandro may not know where every door will lead, but he’s ready to open them. His journey is a reminder that the future takes shape over time, one experience and one opportunity at a time.
